A Word from the Bishop about the 2021 Appointment Making Process

2/15/2021

The Cabinet and I want to thank the Pastor Parish Relations/Staff Parish Relations Committees and clergy for the faithful work you completed during the month of January in order to return the appointment preference forms by Feb. 1. This information is important to the process of consultation regarding pastoral appointments to be fixed at Annual Conference in June. We are all working together as partners in the Gospel. Thank you!

The Cabinet and I ask that you be our prayer partners during this appointment making season. The next phase of our work will occur during the last two weeks of February as the appointive cabinet meets to discuss each of our 588 local churches. We will read the name of each church and pastor. The District Superintendent will then share information gained through the consultation process. We do not rush through this process for this is our opportunity to fully embrace the totality of local churches, extension ministries, and clergy of South Georgia. An important part of this process is noting those appointments where there is a request for the pastor to stay, to move, or an openness to do either. Please pray for us as we consider the needs and opportunities of each appointment.

After this review of every local church, extension ministry, and all clergy, the process of making appointments will unfold during the month of March. We ask for your prayers for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in this process. The latter part of the month will be a time when superintendents will call clergy to share details of their appointment and will notify PPR/SPR chairs of the appointment.

After Holy Week and Easter, the Cabinet will reconvene to attend to any final details. Our intent is to release the list of appointments no later than Sunday, April 18. Contacts between the receiving church and the new pastor will occur during the month of May.

The Moving Pastors Workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 5. All pastors receiving a new appointment are expected to participate in this workshop. Again this year, the Moving Pastors Workshop will be held online.

Moving Day will be June 16.

Because you understand the importance of this process, the Cabinet and I thank you for keeping us in your prayers. We are servants of Christ, and we seek the guidance of Christ for this work.

Alive Together at the Table,

R. Lawson Bryan
